Some Vice-Presidentialish Ideas
Don’t forget–if you want a super fab Chris Tomlin cd (and who doesn’t?), then leave your happy list. And you can write more than one! Each list= an entry! The more happy lists the better! See details HERE. You have until Wed. September 3rd. Speaking of Chris Tomlin, I have a student whose last name is Tomlin. Today I randomly asked him who his favorite band was, and he says, “Chris Tomlin.” And I’m like, “OMIGOSH…are you like…RELATED?” And he says (are you ready for this????)
“No.”
That kid almost had an instant A.
Here’s today’s “Things I’m Happy for Right Now” list.
1. Today’s Friday, and I don’t even have a funeral this weekend!
2. Going to the movies tonight. It’s been a while, and I’m having withdrawals.
3. No students for 3 days. Thank you Jesus. You are mighty to save.
4. Time to read a meaningless romance novel (or two) (or three)
5. Cool front this weekend!
6. The smell of rain
7. Three day weekend.
8. Joyce Meyer’s take on anything. (And you can download her free on ipod! I’m loving that!)
9. Today is Friday.
10. My mom’s cooking.
11. A clean kitchen (which I have when I eat at my mother’s)
12. Sonic grilled cheese. It’s hard to go wrong with Texas toast and a slab of American.
13. Good friends (some whom I’ve never even met) who play along with the Things That Make Me Happy list.
So we all know who Obama picked for his number two. But McCain is still keeping his pasty lips zipped. (Seriously, his mouth is gray. Two words, Mr. McCain…Estee Lauder.) Anyway, I don’t know who he is picking, but today I got to thinking of my own choices, should Senator McCain happen to call me and ask for my opinion. (And I always think not enough people take advantage of that free service I offer.)
1. Condoleeza Rice- HELLLEWWWW! This woman could run the world. Literally. Like the woman runs, bikes, plays the piano, dresses okay, never has a bad hair day, and not only does she understand foreign policy, but she understands sports. What’s not to love? She has my vote for Queen of the Universe.
2. Bill Cosby-The Coz has made some mistakes and marital boo-boos (which automatically makes him a shoo-in for politics), but was there ever a better TV dad than him? And who better to co-run the USA than Dr. Huxtable? That guy knew everything. And Bill Cosby does not take any crap. Have you heard him get on his soap box about his social issues and parenting? He makes you shake your head and say, “Amen,” even if you’re not the sort and have nothing more than a cat listed as your dependent. And he’s funny. And he does impressions. And we haven’t had an actor in the White House in a while. And he doesn’t wear those ugly sweaters anymore.
3. That doctor from House. Speaking of not putting up with crap. He’s a little intimidating. And the guy’s like brilliant. Have you ever solved the case while watching? No. Me neither.
4. Agent Booth from the show Bones. Because he’s hot. And this is my list. And I’ve liked him since he had fangs and permanent depression on Buffy. Not that I watched that show. I just remember a few commercials…or something.
5. Ben Stiller’s dad, Jerry. Somehow I think this guy just makes the world a better place.
6. Michael Phelps. Sure he’s a little young, but clearly he’s a winner. He has a good support system in his mom, and he’s already won over the hearts of many countries. And you have to trust a guy who would never pee in a pool.
7. The Jonas Brothers. Here’s a harsh truth–sometimes people get picked for things just because they’re popular.
8. John and Kate Plus Eight. They’ve already successfully managed a small legion of kids. What’s another 300 million people to take care of?
9. Raven from That’s So Raven. She’s funny and she’s psychic. If she said there were WMDs, I’d believe her. And she has survived Hollywood without falling off the good girl wagon and turning into a total hooch.
10. Carlton from Fresh Prince. The VP doesn’t really do anything anyway, but Carlton could be the dancing VP. America needs a little cheering up. Besides…argyle sweater vests–how can you go wrong? And bad dancing never looked so good.
11. That Bush’s Baked Beans dog. Sure he’s got a big mouth, but he’s really sweet about it. Squealers usually aren’t cute.
12. Iron Man. Did you see that movie? Um, yeah. He can do anything in that little souped-up jumpsuit.
13. Jack Black. He sings, he makes up songs, he has cool moves, and I think he would sympathize with my idea for an all-sweats dress code in public schools. It’s just a hunch.
14. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live alums. Because they’re funny and know just what inappropriate thing to say at just the right moment. This could bring a new level of coolness to our international affairs and boring State of the Union addresses.
15. Dr. Oz. Except for his fruity beliefs on past lives, he’s a-okay. We need someone to make us (me) drop the cheese burgers and snap us (me) back into shape. Plus he comes with all sorts of neato visual aids.
Well, that’s my list. What about yours? Who do you think would make a great vice-prez?
Speaking of president… I have a bit of news. Thanks to my friend Sal for getting me to this point in my life. (Mom, you might want to sit down for this.) Ladies and gentlemen…without further ado, I, Jenny B. Jones am throwing my hat into the presidential ring as well! I’ve already received quite a bit of coverage already, and my grandma campaign manager is immensely pleased. Check it out HERE.
Have a great weekend. Keep your happy lists coming!
JEN

oh gosh if Michael Phelps was chosen as a VP candidate i think i would just die of happiness…afer i placed my vote though lol
Oh, wow. Here’s my happy list:
1. I’m loving full-time college
2. I’m 17 today
3. A certain author has informed me that one of her characters has the same birthday as me, so happy birthday, KP!
4. I have my first cross-country race today.
5. I discovered that a guy I knew like eight or nine years ago and totally lost touch with is on my cross-country team.
6. My suitemates are AMAZING people
7. I just finished Julius Caesar (something of Shakespeare’s I actually like)
8. The new CT CD is coming out, hello!
9. This Zippity Blog always makes me smile. If I’m down, and there’s nothing new, I just surf through the archives.
10. My pictures of roses turned out fantastic and look great on the dorm walls.
My happy list:
1) 3 day weekend (enough said)
Long walks down winding roads (seriously been on 4 in the past two days)
2) That $6 text book I had to buy
3) Ringdowns (friends getting engaged -weird but cool!)
4) Missy Higgins’ song “Ten Days”
5) Seeing my name in print today
6) Knowing One Tree Hill starts a new season on Monday
7) Chats that last into the night
9) Keeping up with Youtube, Facebook, and my favorite blogs
10) This list!
Oh, and number 11…
11) That smiley face for number 8. I had no idea it would do that!
While I’m pretty impressed with the choice of Sarah Palin (though I was hoping for Condaleeza too), I’d totally go with you on the Doctor from House thing if it weren’t for one little problem. He’s a Brit. He could be VP, but if something happened to McCain (assuming elected) he couldn’t take over.
Very sad. Then again, if we could have a Brit for pres, I’d totally go for Tony Blair (love him!) or Richard Branson, who would name us United States of Virgin, make a bazillion dollars, and probably terrify the rest of the world into behaving well and buying Virgin products.
Look’s like there’s one candidate who’s coming up from behind–ha!
I Got the Happy’s!
1. Sarah Palin. Love her. Alaska has the best governor, she don’t take no crap. (I know because ALL, and I mean every single one of my relatives live in Alaska. I’m talking biweekly updates here.)
2. FALL FLIPPIN RETREAT! Whew, I really need this 3 day weekend, and why not spend it blobbing for Jesus?
3. My friends. They’re there for me in the tough times.
4. Vanilla bean cappuccino w/ Raspberry (try it.)
5. Calling our Senators. That’s right, I called and left messages for Lincoln and Pryor. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=25796498524
6. Rain. Oh, I love it. Even if my hair goes triangle curly and I’m soaked and freezing by the time I get to class.
7. Shane Claiborne. Still a genius.
8. Political convos with the parents-very interesting.
9. The idea of Michael Phelps running for president. Beautiful.
10. Countdown to the Office season premier! I can’t spell… Less than a month!
edit to number 9.
insert “vice” before president.
I am sooo behind the whole Michael for president thing. (Phelps, that is. We’re on first name basis these days -in case anyone was wondering.)
Jenny, unfortunately it seems as though McCain has (against all better judgment) ignored your list and chosen his VP. The one redeeming quality in his choice is that she IS a Sarah. And Sarahs are right up there with Condoleezas and Bill Cosbys. Oh, and of course Jennys.
Things that make me happy:
1. LONG WEEKEND!!
2. The last day of work today! I was sure something (most likely death by boredom)would prevent me from seeing this day.
3. A vast selection of good reading for this weekend.
4. The US Open. And time to watch it, thus making me sound cool in the various sporting circles I run in.
5. An upcoming hair appointment. It was a toss-up between going and getting reconstructive surgery (it’s in poor, poor shape) or pulling a Britney*.
6. Coca-Cola and its prominence/effect on modern civilization
7. Michael Phelps
8. Sleep. And lots of it.
9. Going stationary shopping for back-to-college.
10. Doing the happy dance (and causing car to swerve) while driving home after said last day of work. Then playing same song repeatedly and loudly but continually reducing it for fear that people are looking strangely in my direction because a) my in-car moves are not so hot b)music is too loud and people can hear that annoying “dum dum dum” sound which I SWORE never, ever to make. I still don’t know which it was.
*pulling a Britney does not entail the following activities: leaving house w/o underwear, getting married twice to 2, er…questionable characters. It does, however, entail going balding. And maybe also attacking cars with umbrellas. That looked potentially fun, and also like a good way to relieve stress.
Happy list for Friday:
1. Watching old reruns of “Get Smart”
2. The gray-green color of the Pacific Ocean
3. Book hunting in my favorite bookstores
4. Extra whipped cream on my frappuchinos
5. Getting into Character by Brandilyn Collins
6. Hearing my voice sound good in the shower
7. Any kind of Cheerios cereal
8. Weird dreams
9. Soft breezes on a humid day
10. Shoes that don’t kill my feet
11. Dancing in my bedroom when no one is watching
12. Learning about my characters
13. God’s forgiveness
My happy list -
1. 3 day week-end
2. not so hot today, just pleasantly warm
3. we won our football game last night!! Yeah!!
4. more great football today in South Carolina
5. I got a new book in the mail yesterday
6. The new Republican VP pick - she’s got to be the most unusual candidate ever - she’s a moose hunter AND she’s attractive.
7. shopping this week-end
8. Franklin Graham will be here in a couple of weeks with TobyMac, Kirk Franklin, Casting Crowns and it’s all free. The best price ever.
9. it’s almost boot season
Dawn, the VP is cute, isn’t she? Much better looking than McCain. And your Graham, Mac, Crowns, etc. event sounds AWESOME! How lucky you are!
Gracie, extra whipped cream is the best! I love those frapps. It’s my airport food (one of many things I eat/drink), and I’m flying in a few weeks…there will be frapps.
Maddee, you’re just days into 17 and you’re in COLLEGE? WHAT IN THE WORLD? Have you ever heard of Doogie Houser? Happy birthday to you and Katie Parker by the way!!! Same b-day,same age!
Amy, Ringdowns? What is that? I might need this term in my vocab. And I listened to Missy Higgins on amazon today. She has a great sound!
Word Vix, Richard Branson…can you imagine? That would be awesome. If nothing else got fixed, I think flight priced would. And trips to the moon.
Sarah, no more work ever for that job? Or just this weekend? And I TOTALLY relate to going Britney. I wish we all would (hair-wise). And how fun would it be to take a big umbrella to a car? It would make me feel better.
No more work ever for that job! It was only a summer job but it didn’t feel like it.
you should totally run. you’d so win. i’d vote for ya.

Ringdown = a tradition at some colleges (Taylor being one of them) where, when a girl gets engaged, a meeting is announced for all the girls and the romantic story of the girl getting the ring is told. The meeting consists of a lit candle being passed around the circle and being blown out by the engaged one, getting to see the ring, and the infamous question: “Have you farted in front of your guy?”
Missy Higgins is awesome! She is a newly found favorite. And if you like her, you’ll probably also like A Fine Frenzy and Marie Digby.
If it’s not too much testosterone for you, Jenny B, I’ll give you a man-sized happy list…
1. Dark chocolate. Really dark. So dark it’s almost bitter. oh bay-beee.
2. A brat, a beer, and a baseball game on a sunny August afternoon, seated in the good seats behind the first base dugout.
3. A clean white shirt, a subdued red tie, and a really nice blue suit. (REALLY nice. The kind you get when you sit down with the tailor and get measured.) Then slipping on a pair of Allen Edmonds shoes. Ahhh… Makes you feel like a million bucks.
4. A barber shop shave. Trust me on this.
5. A Lambeau Leap.
6. A Sebastian Junger book. (You can substitute a Stephen Ambrose book, or even a Barbara Tuchman history book, if it’s gray and rainy outside.)
7. Sitting on the beach, watching the waves of the Pacific Ocean roll in.
8. Turning up a great rock-n-roll song too loud — good examples would be the Beatles’ “All My Loving” or “Twist and Shout.” Pete Seeger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” is good as well.
9. Having an email pop up and discovering it’s from my daughter. Or having the phone ring and discovering it’s my son.
10. Waking up early Sunday morning, drinking a Starbucks cappucino, and finding the newspaper dry and unopened.
11. Stepping off an airplane and seeing Mrs Hickenlooper waiting and smiling.
12. Turning on the TV and discovering there’s a real sport on — something that doesn’t require judges giving scores, and where grown men can sprain their ACL’s. (Bonus points if the Oregon Ducks are playing.)
13. Having somebody compliment my children.
14. Discovering that, even though I forgot to run on the weekend, and we went out for Italian, I still weigh within a couple pounds of what I’m supposed to weigh.
15. Guinness, served in a friendly Irish pub.
Amy, I’ve never heard of ringdown! It sounds very 1950s and nifty.
Bethany, SO glad you got an extra bathroom. More bathrooms always make life easier.
Mel, I had to Google AND Youtube the Lambeau Leap. Totally learned something. And I’ve seen a picture of Mrs. Hickenlooper. She’s foxy!
