Want That Tomlin CD?
I am LOVING these “Things That Make Me Happy Right Now” lists. They make ME happy just to read them. I seriously smile with every one. So keep them coming. If you want to be entered in the drawing for Chris Tomlin’s new CD HELLO LOVE, then leave your happy list. See Monday’s post for more info. You have until September third.
So what was Mary Kate Olson thinking HERE? Seriously, WHY is she considered some sort of fashion icon? She FORGOT her PANTS for crying out loud!
I’ve mentioned Tyler Perry before, but I LOVE this guy and his movies (most of them). I’m a firm believer in supporting his stuff even if it looks stinky because he is a bold Christian out there making it in Hollywood. I’m on his mailing list (not his personal friends list, of course, but his mass email type of thing. But maybe one day…) and I love to get the occasional email. Read THIS and tell me this doesn’t make you proud of Tyler Perry.
So every year I do this pop quiz when I first meet my students. I give them this big story about how I always got the skinny on my new teachers back in the day (I truly did. From elementary through college), and I’m sure they’ve done the same thing. Then I give them a quiz with questions about moi. They’re told it’s worth 500 points, and if they fail it, they might as well not come to class because they’re is no recovering. AND if they should happen not to know an answer…make something up really good and pray for mercy and partial credit. I thought I’d share some answers.
1. What is my worst junior high memory?
You didn’t have one. You were too cool.
2. What is my favorite song?
“I’m Bringing Sexy Back.”
“Tastes Like Kevin Bacon” by I Wrestled a Bear Once. (this is a real group/song)
“MsJonesAlicious”
3. What are some of my hobbies?
Reading, shopping, and dazzling people with my awesomeness.
Frolicking through flowers
Cage wrestling
4. If I had not become a teacher, I would’ve been a…
Street-dancing nun
Roller disco lady
Hannah Montana impersonator
Bunny-eared TV set antennae receiver helper
5. What’s a sport I like to watch?
Tongue ping-pong
Extreme ironing
6. At what school did I previously teach?
Alcatraz
7. What’s my cat’s name?
LL Cool Whip
8. What is my favorite food?
Children
9. What book am I reading now?
Harry Potter and the Midlife Crisis
Aren’t they so clever? Brilliant is the only kind I teach. ; )
I’m SUPER excited over all the talk here that we’ll have an early winter. I know that doesn’t necessarily translate into a snowy, school-closing winter, but still. A girl can dream.
My mom said that someone at work said that the woolly worms are out (or something. They are definitely doing something). And because there was fog in August, there will be snow in winter. And the Golden Rods have already bloomed (Don’t know what that is, but I’m glad they’re early). AND the katydids are out and making noise. And my friend’s mom (hey, Vanessa Hall!) said she saw monarch butterflies migrating. And the Farmers Almanac is predicting early winter and big stuff. And I’ve been seeing ducks or birds migrating too. I’m not sure if it’s North. I don’t really know my directions, but I’m sure birds flying to the left of Walgreens has to mean something.
Don’t forget you can submit more than one happy list!
Here’s mine for today:
THINGS THAT MAKE ME HAPPY RIGHT NOW
1. Talk of early winter
2. Getting “my” seat at the movie theater
3. Five minutes of energy
4. My new pens!!!
5. People magazine’s CD and book reviews.
6. Mini chocolate donuts
7. Catching an old favorite Friends episode (”It’s a moo point…”)
8. New YouTube videos
9. Winning a bid on eBay
10. A good hair day (even a good hair hour)
Have a great week. And if you see anything migrating early, let me know.
JEN

I have the first comment! I didn’t even read your post yet, but I wanted to be first. >=) I will post again later after I’ve actually READ it, but for now, I bid you goodbye.
The hummingbirds are leaving as well - I had 18 last week, this week only six or seven. I’m going to start the betting with our first snow by November 20th!
Nice list! Your kids really are genius. I have no idea whether winter will come early or not. Though I live in Southern California, and it’s only been ninty degrees instead of one hundred.
Here’s my list for today:
1. Quoting “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets”
2. Larabars
3. Hearing piano renditions of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” in the middle of summer
4. Organic chocolate
5. Watching YouTube videos
6. Sitting in the oak tree at the park
7. Bottled water
8. Prayer walks
9. Good poetry
10. Reading my list of blogs
11. Steinway pianos
12. Singing “No Ordinary Love” by TobyMac in the middle of Starbucks
13. Green eyes
OK, here’s my list of things that make me happy right now:
1. Listening the praise and worship on the radio
Love that purple paper!
2. Getting to write about my favorite subject - chronically ill teenagers
3. The trip to the eye doctor tomorrow (maybe she’ll prescribe glasses and I can finally get out from under these massive headaches)
4. Reading your blog (that counts for double points, right??) Seriously, it always makes me laugh
5. Random trips to Wal-mart.
6. falling into vats of milk chocolate (ok, so that hasn’t happened *yet*. Still, a girl can dream.)
7. Sausage biscuits for supper. (Mmmm)
8. That I am healthy (for the moment)
9. That I have purple pads of paper to write on
Debbie, who thinks you are just beautiful, Ms. Jones. Not that I would ever try to bribe a judge of a fine contest. Unless of course that would work.
Things that make me happy, in no certain order:
Raindrops and roses and forks in the front yard
Getting my name in JennyB’s blog - Bard
He’s my turtle!
Peaches in summer and creatures on wings
These are a few of my favorite things
Sleeping eight hours with windows wide open
Garden tomatoes and purple green beans
These are some more of my favorite things
When the kids whine
When the bills come
When I’m feeling bad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel
So sad.
My Happy List
1. My very quiet classroom while my kids are at recess.
2. Hearing my phone ring and seeing the name on caller id of a friend I really want to talk to (ex. Jen Jones).
3. text messages…I just love getting them
4. babies when they smile and hold their arms out to be hugged or picked up…melts my heart.
5. Reeses peanut butter cups
6. Dr. Pepper
7. My bed and my pillow
8. Rainy Saturdays when I can sleep in and be a bum all day.
9. Worshipping at my church each Sunday.
10. Real letters or cards…not e-mails, but real in my mailbox letters…don’t ever really get them, but when I do, they make me happy!
Jen Jones - I am seriously going to beat you if you keep on praying for a long and early winter. Us people in the north DO NOT WANT the winters to come earlier and they sure don’t want them to last longer!!!!
Also, loved the email from Tyler Perry. I had no idea that he was a Christian, and a bold one at that. That makes me really happy and now I want to watch some of his movies!!
P.S. Another thing that makes me happy is YOUR BLOG!! I seriously catch myself laughing out loud (kind of like when I read your witty books)!!!
I loved your student’s responses to the pop quiz. Brilliant stuff.
I also lol’d out loud about Mary Kate. I have said before, I don’t really get why she’s such a fashion icon … because very often she just wears grungy oversize stuff. Granted I am FINE with that! I would love for the street version of my favorite pajamas to be in style. Still, it’s confusing. I think Rachel Bilson always looks really pretty, in a very hipster way. I got all cracked up reading an issue of Nylon the other day. They always do sections on makeovers based on iconic women in movies, music, tv, etc. This time they used Mrs. Roper (of Three’s a Company fame) as their inspiration for one look. It was interesting (I mean really - beads and a moo moo and you’re all set, right?) Thanks for writing such a fun blog
Erin V, snow fall by Nov. 20? What is it you say–from your mouth to God’s ears? Bring it!
Gracie, you have expensive piano tastes!
Debbie, random trips to Wal-Mart are not happy things for me. It’s total punishment. UGH.
Mrs. Hall–great job. I was humming that tune ALLLL day long.
Heather, I LOVE rainy, sleepy Saturday mornings. It’s been forever since we had one, but I have high hopes for this coming Sat. AND I’ve recently renewed my practice of sending real cards. I mailed a real letter just this week!
Jessica, you haven’t seen Diary of a Mad Black Woman? Madea’s Family Reunion? ARE YOU SERIOUS??????
Natalie, omigosh. I LOVED Mrs. Roper. Can you imagine a world where it’s socially acceptable to wear mumuus in broad daylight? That would be awesome.
