Memorial Weekend Accomplishments…?

Oh, I LOVE Memorial Day weekend. It’s like a warm-up for summer vacation. In fact, it’s gonna be hard to go back to school this week. If we hadn’t had snow, we’d be out, but as we all know, I’m always okay with that tradeoff. I love me some snow days.

So this weekend was fairly productive. I finally wrote some pages on the second book of the new series (did I mention there won’t be a Katie Parker IV?). And I read a few books. And I (dun, dun, dunnnnn) PAINTED!!!

I have painted almost all the rooms at least a few times in the seven years I’ve been in this house. Some of them have been painted about five or six times, though not necessarily on purpose. Anytime I take on a painting project something always goes wrong. And it’s not because I’m a crappy painter. I’m a decent painter, if I do say so myself. I don’t know what happens. It’s like I open a can of Valspar and negative energy attaches itself to my roller.

I have not painted my dining room and kitchen since I first moved in. A long time ago I spent DAYS giving it this special Italian finish. It was supposed to be a tuscan gold glaze, but it didn’t exactly work. I had to mix this orange in with the gold, and when you look at the finished product you KNOW the orange ATE all the gold. So I never really liked it from the get-go, but it was too much work to fix. So it’s taken me allll this time to repaint it. Plus I was too busy repainting my bedroom 500 times to get to it. But yesterday I was like, “No more! I’m going to paint today!” So after church I went and got the stuff.

So long orange wall!

“Hi. I’m an orange wall, and I clash with absolutely everything, If Martha Stewart saw me she would set me on fire.”

So I had this pretty reddish brown picked out. I have loved it ever since I stepped foot in the Shogun restaurant’s bathroom. And I always thought, “How will I ever show the guys at Lowe’s that this is the color I want?” And maybe a year later someone smashed in part of the wall in that bathroom (yay!), and I thought, “They won’t miss a little more of the paint.” And I peeled some off. I’ve kept it for like two years.

And then yesterday when I went to Lowe’s (”Hey, it’s Jen! She must be repainting her bedroom.”), I made this split decision to not go with the red/brown. I don’t know why. But I couldn’t get the red. I mean, what if my love for the color was really just about my love for some good fried rice? Because it’s probably more than a coincidence that I get my designing inspirations in restaurant bathrooms. Anyway, red is kind of out, even though I LOVE this color. And I couldn’t go with the popular chocolate brown because that’s what color my bedroom is this week. So I wanted a coppery/bronze. So I got the paint, and for some crazy reason it went on really well. Few mishaps. The tape went up quick, and I was done in one night! I knew it was too good to be true.

The paint job looks great. The color…not so much.

It’s like Burnt Sienna. You know, the crayon that was always sharp in the pack because NOBODY ever used it??? That’s what color my walls are now. So I traded orange for brownish/orange. It’s pretty much the color of dog barf. Or adobe. I now live in an adobe. AND it’s the same color as the cabinet stain in the kitchen, which is NOT good. When I get up for my 3 am Twinkie snack, the last thing I want is trouble finding the cabinets.

Yeah, basically I will be painting it again before summer is out. I don’t know what I do to deserve these things, but when it comes to painting, it stinks to be me. I think I’ll just move the Twinkies into my bedroom. I don’t want them to get lost.

Have a good week. ; )
Jen

Hahaha. And I thought my mom was bad with painting. She can never make her mind up about things. Me, on the other hand, my room has had wallpaper for quite a few years. I want to paint it eventually, because my lovely cats decided to scratch my walls….

And to think you could have been camping with us and getting rained on! Can’t believe you passed up all that fun to paint. What is wrong with you my friend? :)

Have you heard of wallpaper? Maybe you should try it. Just slap on some gloop, stick it to the wall and hey presto, you have a beautiful wall and sometimes it magically has a cool texture or pretty patterns on it.

Or…you could always go for magnolia, yes its not terribly exciting, BUT, if you use your imagiation you could say it looks like deliciously cream vanilla ice cream, the posh incredibly fattening kind. When my Dad finished painting my brother’s bedroom a couple of weeks ago I commented that it looked like ice cream and then threatened to splat little black specs all over it to make it even more like vanilla. I refrained, only because the black wouldn’t go with the blue and green bedspreads, and also I don’t think my Dad or brother would appreciate it.

Ho Hum… yes, as I was saying…wallpaper it (or ice cream it)!
*imagians you standing a few feet away with a jumbo tub of vanilla ice cream, chucking it at the wall, taking sneaky licks in between throwings*

Nice wall Ms. J. Thanks for talking about our class and the ” big wrestler’s” last part of the What I Would Change If I Were Principle speech. It made me laugh and so did the talkin’ cat video.

When I first read your name I was, like, wait. Isn’t that a book series. I finally figured it out-Junie B. Jones/Jenny B. Jones. I bet you get that a lot :) Too bad about the paint. Our kitchen was green and my Mom wanted to touch it up, but bought the wrong color green…you don’t want to see the walls (she still hasn’t fixed it!).

I read your entry on Bon Jovi and the nosebleed seats. It reminded me of when I saw Lion King the musical and we were so far up that I could see the chandelier below me. Anyways just leaving a “zippity” comment…I thought Danbee’s was the absolute best comment. Hope your painting skills improve. You’re amazing!

are you already done with school?!?! I have like, three more weeks! And (unfortunately) i go to a private school, so my lovely principal decided “Hey! I hate these kids so much, let’s keep them locked up in their odor filled crappy classrooms and see how long it takes for one of them to snap!” of course, my teachers don’t appreciate it so they do SUPER mean stuff like give 23 PAGE WORKSHEETS! WHICH AREN’T EVEN BEING GRADED! But we MUST do it… I pretend to do it >=).
I tried doing rag curls with my hair and I ended up looking like… you. I looked in the mirror and thought “I.. look… like……………….” Then I brushed it and it took on a triangular shape. Then i knew for certain it looked bad when I went to school and people said stuff like “Hi Julia! Um… wow… Like the new braces color!” or “You should really put that up in a ponytail…”
P.S. The story wasn’t an insult. Only my hair, which looks good on you, reminded me of you.

I just had to thank Gab. And…um…Julia May, sorry but when I was just checking out the blogs and saw the “blog enterer”’s names and stuff, I thought you were this old lady in Berrytown, Ohio or something…So I guess if you are in school and everything you must NOT be the old lady I thought you were. Sorry. OCD is popping up again I guess. Luvved your frame deal, Ms. Jones.

I always loved burnt sienna. It was my second favorite crayon (Midnight Blue was my favorite)!

Best wall color ever? I bought a can of grey-ish mis-tint paint, and had them tint it to “lavender”. It came out the EXACT shade of black raspberry ice cream. I kid you not! That bedroom was so bad for my waistline, since every time I just stared at the walls, I got hungry.

And on top of that? The trim was “eggplant”.

Sorry I missed the rain out camping trip. I do so love to camp. (BAH!)
Keilie, one word–sunscreen. You will thank me for it twenty years from now when your friends are hitting the botox. Just be glad you are growing up in a sunscreen-aware generation. The heat from the sum total of my childhood sunburns could light a power plant.

Saira, wallpaper is back in! I’ve seen some SERIOUSLY cute patterned paper. I really wish I would’ve papered my bedroom. Especially before I painted it 300x in one week.

Paris, green was one of my color mistakes too. I love the color. Maybe just not for my bedroom.

Julia, hang in there with school. Summer will be there before you know it and your 23 page meaningless worksheets will just be a faded memory.

Word Vixen–eggplant trim? I dunno about that. I think it would seriously affect the fung shui. Whatever that is. : )

And thanks to all my students for their sweet (yet crazy) comments. : ) I had a really good “batch” this semester.

Hey Ms. Jones! Class was fantastic, and thanks for the “cultural” movie! :) It’s one of my favorites! I’m sorry, but I never relized you were an author, it fills my heart with shame. I REALLY want to read your books now! I read the first chapter of the new one, and YOU ROCK AT WRITING! I just want to keep reading, which is good becase I haven’t found an interesting book lately. Oh, and I’ll keep you posted on the competitive speaking. (that i will WIN)haha, I’ll always think of my 9th grade Oral Comm class when I’m presenting ANYTHING. :) I’m proud to have you as a teacher. <3

  19. Stephenee C. May 29th, 2008 7:54 pm

    Ms. Jones:
I’m going to miss your class next year! I may have been really quiet in your class and weird and stuff BUT-I think that you are an awesome teacher! And I remeber how you said that you liked The Soup, and I like that show too! My favorite is the one where he’s making fun of that girl off of The Bad Girls Club(I think that’s what it’s called)where she’s really drunk or something and he says”Line forms to the left.” :) And that Orbit gum commercial?!? I have memorized the whole thing from start to finish and say it often and random times”What the french toast?”:).
Well Ms. Jones, I hope you have a great summer and your students next year aren’t to bad. Ms.Jones-you are a grrrreat teacher(haha, Tony the Tiger):)
